I really enjoyed Margaret Cargos conference about her realist review. It felt like she found the right words to express what was stuck in my mind for a very long time. Is there a way you could post her presentation? Thanks!

Realist Review is a relatively new approach to the systematic synthesis of evidence. Rather than the traditional review method of simply measuring and documenting program effectiveness, realist review looks at programs with an eye to trying to figure out what works for whom, in what circumstances, in what respect and how. It does this by assessing outcomes in relation to the intervention mechanism, which in turn is assessed in relation to its specific context. It purports to be particularly appropriate for complex, socially situated intervention, and thus may prove appropriate for synthesising the knowledge gained through thousands of widely disparate PR studies. If anyone is interested in the concepts and methodology of realist review, take a look at Pawson, et al. J Health Serv Res Policy Vol 10 Suppl 1 July 2005: Realist Review - a new method of systematic review designed for complex policy interventions. Also, Geoff Wong will be here in June to give a seminar on realist review - see above in the schedule.

Hello, I found the opening season seminar very motivating (in terms of pursuing study of participatory research methods). Its very exciting to learn of all that is happening with the development of models for conducting PR and assessing PR outcomes, and to assist and participate in what seems to be a movement towards increasing use and value of PR.

Welcome to the new PRAM Seminar blog. Please leave your comments on past seminars. We would like to foster discussion around each topic in order to provide feedback to the speaker while better understanding the process of doing participatory research. Below are previous feedback posts we received. They have been listed here as anonymous because at the time of their posting we had not asked people to identify themselves, nor explicitly stated that their name would be shared.

Key points from seminar and discussion - 1. Social justice and willingness to change society 2. enthusiasm, openness and respect as central elements of success 3. Time and patience (partnerships are based on confidence and trust, and it takes time to built them). Feedback to presenter - key points from the discussion: it is ok (and relevant) to remunerate participants; PAR = giving voice and power; PA researchers are rich, sensitive and interesting people. Final Comments - These are the Presenters comments (CB) (previously posted on feedback forum)

1. I think one of the issues implicit this talk is that of community - the community of welfare recipients. In a way, it is a self-identified community in regard to the organization that represents it, but in a way it is a community that has been fabricated in response to perceptions about discrimination... there is something about naming that is in itself creative of the thing being named. This intersects with Chiaros comment on vulnerability of the participants, and the stigmatization that may be attached to being filmed as a welfare recipient, and thus gives us food for thought, for the next talk... 2. I do like the method that Christophe is developing with the round-tables, where not only do issues emerge and ways of dealing with them get elaborated, but people interacting with one another creates links and in itself helps to bridge the very gaps being addressed. 3. I think that it is very important for the validity of participatory research and to show its benefits to document every step closely, whether through some form of formal evaluation or through observation, so that making the film of the process of making the film would have been informative and beneficial to PR, as well as in teaching PR. I wanted to comment on Pierres question with regard to why Christophe and the team didnt choose to use actors in their film, but rather the participants themselves. Christophe answered that he felt it was more personal to use the real people. Pierre added that perhaps the actors could have done a more convincing job of conveying emotions attached to the content. I guess what I have to add is that for the end product, the end user, it probably doesnt matter which people were used. I mean, the oral health professionals dont know the participants and are not likely to know whether the person on camera is an actor or a participant. I think the important thing to note here is that it was important for the group to keep the participants. It empowered those who appeared in the film and it made the experience more real, tangible for everyone involved in the project. It brings the experience full circle.
