Montreal Children's Hospital, Room C-431
2300 Tupper, Montreal QC (Metro Atwater)

Dawn Allen and Franco Carnevale will be presenting their work on two different Participatory Action Research Projects:

Dawn Allen, Postdoctoral Fellow, McGill Programs in Whole Person Care, Dept of Oncology

Presentation title: Methodological challenges of PAR in a study of End Stage Renal Disease (ESRD)

Presentation Focus: The Participatory Action Research (PAR) study we have just begun in two of the MUHC nephrology units focuses on the nature of suffering and healing for people living with Chronic Kidney Failure. The study’s objective is to find ways to promote healing (a sense of peace and integrity) for patients in a context where attention to medical technology may be upstaging attention to the whole patient in the treatment of ESRD. The presentation will begin with a quick overview of the study’s design and the data that has been gathered in the few months since the study’s launch in September. I will then present some of the findings so far and will elicit feedback about how to best proceed given some of the ethical and structural challenges we have begun to encounter.

Franco Carnevale, Assistant Director, School of Nursing at McGill, and chairman of the Pediatric Ethics Committee at the Montreal Children's Hospital.

Frank will be discussing a current project proposal he is submitting for funding: Documenting the Documentary: Recognizing the voices of children living with technology-assisted disabilities (a PAR study using documentary filmmaking) [Working title].
